Girl Characteristics – Program Do’s and Don’ts

When planning activities and programs for Daisy Girl Scouts there are some do’s and don’ts. Knowing these do’s and don’ts will make activities and programs successful and fun, yet challenging for the girls providing them with the opportunity to learn and try new things.

Young Brownie (developmentally 5 ½ to 7)

Do’s

  • Provide high-energy activities
  • Give opportunities to be first or the winner
  • Expect them to attend for as long as 30-40 minutes
  • Let them write and copy, but from their own piece of paper
  • Expect mumbling, talking, long explanations, thinking out loud
  • Let them do their own separate work
  • Expect some whining and complaining
  • Provide opportunity for choices between A and B only
  • Provide routine and structure
  • Encourage their love to dramatize through action, songs, etc.

Don’ts

  • Change activities too often at one time
  • Expect silence for too long
  • Expect them to follow directions the first time
  • Make a lot of changes

Older Brownie (developmentally 7 ½ to 8 ½)

Do’s

  • Expect listening and reading
  • Slow work style- it will take them a while to finish and they resent being rushed
  • Take time to explain and reason
  • Allow them to make corrections or change their minds
  • Expect them to “keep going
  • Let them work in small groups
  • Let them explore

Don’ts

  • Rush them
  • Wide games may not be good unless they provide plenty of time
  • Have long periods of inactivity
